A Glimpse into the Brilliant Mind of DJ Whatt
By Kristen Aldridge
Posted on 23 May 2011 at 11:18am

“If you aren’t dancing, I’m not doing my job”, says DJ Whatt (aka DOSVEC) on his official Twitter page. I think it’s safe to say at first listen to his new album “Glimpses” – dropping today – he has you at first beat!

Positively Celebrity got an exclusive interview with the producer/dj extraordinaire to talk about the new album, his music, and what inspires him to make such bad-ass beats.

What made you want to get into music?

It was a passion that became my career.

How did you get your start as a DJ?

I started DJing at Patricks in Tampa, FL

How would you describe your sound?

As DJ Whatt it’s a very party-break electronic sound – As DOSVEC it’s mashups that cover a wide range of production.

What’s your favorite venue?

Industrial Copera, Granada Spain – The place is just NUTS!

Who are some of your favorite DJ’s and why? Musical artists?

GrandMaster Flash <— Pioneer. Music? Give me some old school hip-hop

What’s been the best part about being a DJ? Worst?

Best – Travel. Worst – Fake people ;-(

Best moment in your career so far?

Getting to perform as DOSVEC in Costa Rica, since I am 1st generation American BUT 100% Costa Rican heritage.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Happily married with a dog, couple of kids & a white picket fence ;-p

If you weren’t a DJ, what would you do?

Probably be an Attorney.

Tell us about Glimpses, dropping today (May 23).

Glimpses is an album that reflects a time span in my life in which I thought I was dating someone but in reality I just had another fan from a distance. We all deserve to be treated the way we treat others and it’s never a good thing when we give 100% but the other party doesn’t.

The songs in the album have individual meanings during the time I was with this person and the track listing is in chronological order during the time I was with her.

When I first meet you, you had me as a 1. “Twisted Boy” with the hopes of me saying 2. “Ooh Ahh, I am, Home”. As time passed by I really thought we were approaching 3. “Better Than Dog Days” since I felt we made it to the 4. “Otherside”. You mentioned how I spoil you by me 5. “Shining Down on Whatever You Like” and I did that thinking 6. “You Got The Love” that could 7. “Make Me Better”. I hoped the day would come when you would 8. “Touch My Bridge & Go” but as I waited for 9. “Delta 1406, to, Wake Up” from its delay. I wondered 10. “Where Had The Love Gone”? 11. “The Things You Can’t Get Enough” were obvious as I was the only one giving all I could & 12. “Just The Way You Are Not Alone” my 13. “Addiction” were the “GLIMPSES” you would give me to your true self. I don’t believe in 14. “ET” but I do know when 15. “Rolling In Life” nothing and I mean NOTHING will succeed if YOU don’t give 100%. We almost had it all if you would have let me 16. “Get It In Deep” to your mind, body and soul.

JUST RELEASED, oo yeah Gowhere fans always gettin’ things first. For all of you who enjoy mashups, this new album is a great listen. Glimpses includes your favorite artists such as Adele, Lloyd, Soulja Boy, Mike Posner, Fabolous and many many more. This mashup album not only will make you dance but also has a special message which we’ll get to in about 10 seconds.

A little more about the DJ that put this whole thing together, DJ Whatt. Known for his mashups, he was featured in the New York Post SIX times. How great is that? I couldn’t get a face-to-face interview since he’s all the way in New York (shout out to the New York Gowhere crew out there) so we had a little interview via email which really does come in handy. Check out the very informational interview after the jump on one of your new favorite DJ’s! And also about that special message I told you to keep a look out for (10 seconds ago), read about how the titles of the album play out..it’s quite interesting/crazy.

Gowhere Hip Hop Interview with DJ Whatt:

Samantha: I’m just curious as to where you got your DJ name from, I think that’s a big part of how fans portray an artist. DJ Whatt, where does that come from?

DJ Whatt: DJ Whatt came from when I first started off and the music was playing a bit loud and my sister was over visiting and she asks me, “Well if you are going to start DJing whatt is going to be your name?” and I responded “Yeah that’s it” she says “Huh” I say “DJ What but with 2 T’s” and for my DOSVEC name, which I use only for mashups, DOS = the number 2 in spanish and VEC is short for Veces which means times so a mashup is 2 songs flipped so I liked DOSVEC

Samantha: It’s not easy to start DJing, I tried DJing one time for a school project and I gave up after the first five minutes. Tell us about your DJ career and how and when you started DJing.

DJ Whatt: As DJ Whatt it’s been over a decade and as DOSVEC 2 years. I have gotten to travel a lot for it and truly appreciate all the people throughout the years that have shown me support

Samantha: Your mixes are amazing, i’ve heard them of course, especially the first one you sent me via twitter! Where do you get motivation and inspiration in to picking which songs you want to mix?

DJ Whatt: Ah Thanks – I first pick the A Capella I want to work on and go from there looking for the ideal instrumental for it but sometimes I am really trying to think outside of the box and combine 2 genres that people would never think to combine.

Samantha: Have you ever mixed a song after spending FOREVER on it and ended up hating it?

DJ Whatt: Funny you ask I have a big collection of songs that I have never released because if I don’t like it – I don’t think others would like it – so just like my motto “If You Aren’t Dancing. I Am Not Doing My Job”

Samantha: GLIMPSES! Your upcoming album! (Which i’m very excited for) Tell us about that album and everything it portrays.

DJ Whatt: Glimpses is an album that reflects a time span in my life in which I thought I was dating someone but in reality I just had another fan from a distance. We all deserve to be treated the way we treat others and it’s never a good thing when we give 100% but the other party doesn’t. We almost had it all if you would have let me 16. “Get It In Deep” to your mind, body and soul.

Samantha: Is this album different than any of your other albums?

DJ Whatt: Glimpses is me giving an insight to my personal life and covers a different range of genres, in which I have never worked on.

Samantha: What inspires you in general?

DJ Whatt: The end result of the listener dancing their ass of to one of my creations and they will always associate that great time they had with my song.

Samantha: Recently touring in Costa Rica (yes, i’m still jealous), tell us about that experience. Where else have you toured?

DJ Whatt: Performing in Costa Rica personally meant a lot to me since I am first generation American but am 100% Costa Rican so it as kinda like coming home. The experience was amazing and can’t wait to return in July. Other great spots have been Southern Spain and Italy

Sidenote from DJ Whatt: I will leave with the point that don’t do anything half-ass since it will never really workouts for you – thx 4 the support & hope to be in your area soon.

Enjoy this mashup album Gowhere fans, it truly is wonderful.

Much love, of course, from me to you.

Glimpsing into DOSVEC’s Glimpses
Plus we got to ask a few questions to this mashup madman!

Posted by Cory Zechmann

I had the chance to sit down with one of the most featured mashup artists on here, DOSVEC, and pick at his brain a little. With the questions below, I wanted to get an introduction on how he went about mashing up tracks. Then we go into his upcoming mixtape, Glimpses, set to release in just under two weeks (May 23).

Make sure to check out the Q&A and if you have any further questions hit it up in the comments below and hopefully we can get him to answer some more! Also, check out one track off Glimpses, “Nelly Furtado vs Florence & The Machine”, an exclusive for just you all!

Get MP3

What software/programs do you use to mash and what for?

When working on mashups I use Acid to sequence the tracks together – then Sound Forge to edit & master the tracks – then Audio Shell Tag Editor so all the meta-data shows up properly in iTunes and on mp3 players.

Where do you find your instrumentals & a capellas? Do you ever extract ‘em out yourself – how accurate can it be done?

I get a lot of material sent via email & the other half by digging around on Google. A capellas are difficult to find since they aren’t released as often by the labels, compared to instrumentals

You can create what is called a “DYI” a capella by using the original song & the original songs instrumental and mixing them together but inverting the instrumental, which will eliminate the beats & leave only the vocals. DYI is accurate if done correctly & the snares aren’t off point.

Describe what principles you use to mash?

It’s all about mashing up in key, simple as that – if it’s not in key it’s going to sound bad the majority of the time. My mission when I work on mashups is to make it sound like if that was the way it originally was made.

How have you evolved as a mash up artist since you first started? Tips for up-n-comers?
Evolving is a time thing – with time u will understand why something sounds good and why something doesn’t. My biggest tip for up-and-comers is to be passionate about your work & the listener will feel that passion.

—————————— Glimpsing Glimpes ——————————

So what’s Glimpes about? It has something to do with a past relationship, right?

Glimpses is an album that reflects a time span in my life in which I thought I was dating someone, but in reality I just had another fan from a distance. I believe we all deserve to be treated the way we treat others and it’s never a good thing when we are giving 100% but the other party isn’t. The track listing is in chronological order during the time I was with her & as you listen to the album you can get the feeling of the way the relationship was going for me. Each song has an individual meaning for me and I can vividly remember the reason behind each song made for her.

Give us your favorite track off the album and describe it for us?

“Twisted Boy” – Keith Sweat’s “Twisted” vs Rihanna’s “Rude Boy”
[My ex] clearly stated to me that music speaks to her in a way nothing else can, so believe it or not 4 days after I met her I made “Twisted Boy” because I had a feeling inside that I never had before. Who doesn’t like Keith Sweat lyrics with a little Rihanna, so the combination made sense & was the start of something great, at least I thought that at the time.

DOSVEC has graciously decided to give away [BLANK]. Thanks for the talk, interesting to a little into the process.

BONUS Track:

Lil Wayne vs We Bang (DOSVEC Mashup) "Lollipop" by DjWhatt
This isn’t on the Glimpses album, but it’s too hot to pass up!
